New Computer

I used to upgrade my desktop computer every year or so to have a machine that could always play the latest PC games. Consequently enough, that was when I myself was working on top-of-the-line PC games and I thought those kind of things were important. In the last few years I’d let the upgrade cycle slip badly. I just don’t play that much anymore, when I do it’s mostly on the console, and as long as XSI keeps running at a satisfactory speed I’m fine with what I have. Or so I thought. With an onslaught of good PC games about to arrive, most notably Neverwinter Nights 2 and Gothic 3, I figured it’s finally time to upgrade my computer. Of course you can’t just ugrade your computer if you’ve been out of the game for such a long time. Oh no, that would be way too easy. I want a new graphics card, but the current generation requires PCI Express. So I need a new motherboard. Which means a new CPU. And a new cooler. And new memory. While we’re at it, let’s just get a new case and some other niceties!
I strictly went for the sweet spot this time around, something else I would never have done a few years ago when it had to be the latest and greatest. But $1000 later I have a pretty neat new system without spending my kids’ college tuition. 3Ghz Pentium, GeForce 7800GTX, 2Gb of RAM – not great, but better than average. So far I (re)installed Oblivion, Quake 4 and Half-Life 2 Ep1, all games that should take advantage of the faster system. When I was done with those I copied Baldur’s Gate 2 from my laptop and resumed playing that instead. It will prepare me for NWN 2, I guess. Yes. And the colors…well, they look twice as pretty when rendered on a 7800GTX card. Yep. I totally needed this new computer.

R.I.P. Rikku

Rikku was doing badly this morning and fading fast, so we had to put her to sleep. Not sure what happened, might be head trauma or some sort of poisoning. The other birds all seem to be doing fine, but I’ll have to watch them closely for the next few days.
Always a bummer when a bird dies, but that’s budgies for you. Rikku was one of the two birds that I first got when I bought the new cage three years ago, she will be remembered fondly as the best climber to get to impossibly placed millet spray around the cage.

One Hit Albums

Da schlendere ich heute abend also so nichts ahnend, laut vor mich hin pfeifend durch die Gegend, als mich auf einmal ein Stoeckchen am Kopf trifft. Und als ich wieder halbwegs klar sehen kann, sehe ich einen manisch lachenden Wolfi um die Ecke verschwinden.
Na gut, natuerlich entspricht die Geschichte nicht ganz der Wahrheit. Ich kann gar nicht pfeifen. Aber das Stoeckchen, das mir Wolfi da via Roland zugeworfen hat, hebe ich natuerlich gerne auf. Um Musikalben gehts da, auf denen ein Track gut genug war, zum Kauf zu ueberreden – nur um dann festzustellen, dass der Rest nicht wirklich zu was taugt. Oder, wie Boris es ausgedrueckt hatte:

Also, gesucht sind Musikalben (keine Compilations) die man hat und von denen man genau einen einzigen Track hört.

Na dann. Mal sehen, was ich zusammenkratzen kann.

Vertical Horizon – Everything You Want
Der Titeltrack wurde so oft im Radio gespielt, dass ich irgendwann nicht anders konnte, als mir das komplette Album zu kaufen. Und das ist recht mau. An den einen oder anderen Track kann ich mich noch erinnern, aber ausser im iPod Shuffle habe ich die Band schon seit Jahren nicht mehr angesteuert.

Finger Eleven – Finger Eleven
Eine weitere Band, die einem im Radio so lange um die Ohren gehauen wurde, bis der geneigte *huestel* Kaeufer gar nicht mehr anders konnte, als laut “Ist ja schon gut, ist ja schon guuuut!” schreiend ins Geschaeft zu rennen. Aber ausser “One Thing” ist auf der CD kein einziges Lied, das mir jemals im Kopf haengen geblieben ist.

Fantomas – Delirium Cordia
“Selbst Schuld”, werden jetzt diejenigen sagen, die mit Mike Pattons Werken vertraut sind. Aber das Vorgaengeralbum “The Director’s Cut” war einfach so genial, dass ich zugreifen musste. Und es nicht haette tun sollen. Welches einzig gehoertes Musikstueck die Beruecksichtigung in dieser Liste rechtfertigt ist schwer zu sagen, das Album hat schliesslich nur einen (60 minuetigen!) Track. Der ausschliesslich aus Soundeffekten besteht. Atmosphaerisch ist die CD auf jeden Fall, und sie hat ein paar sehr kultige Passagen – aber an einem Stueck kann ich mir das nicht anhoeren.

Robbie Williams – Intensive Care
Mag man ueber ihn sagen, was man will, “Escapology” war echt gut gelungen. Und die Live CD auch. Um so schader, dass das Nachfolgealbum so plain Vanilla ist. An “Your Gay Friend” kann ich mich wenigstens noch erinnern, aber der Rest hat sich nie in meinem Gehirn festgesetzt. Eine Einschaetzung, die anscheinend vom einem Grossteil der Fangemeinde geteilt wird.

Die Drei ??? – Jede zweite CD der letzten Jahre
Mag diese Wahl auch etwas merkwuerdig anmuten und die Kriterien nicht 100% erfuellen – diese CDs sind in letzter Zeit sowas von hit and miss, dass ich sie einfach erwaehnen muss. Ich mag die drei ???, wie ich bereits vor etwas laengerer Zeit dokumentierte. Aber die meisten neuen Geschichten wirken einfach wie aus 10 vorherigen Folgen zusammengestueckelt, und die Setups werden auch immer langweiliger.
Inzwischen feiern die drei Detektive ja als “Die Dr3i” (kein Kommentar zu dem Namen) eine Wiedergeburt. Mal sehen, wie die neuen CDs im Vergleich abschneiden. Aber viel Hoffnung habe ich nicht. In Rocky Beach hat sich einfach eine Routine eingestellt, die schwer zu durchbrechen ist.

The Cure – The Cure
100%iger Treuekauf, The Cure muss man einfach unterstuetzen. Zu dumm, dass das Album nicht wirklich gut ist. In “Lost” kann ich mich wenigstens hereinsteigern, aber wenn es dann die ganze CD lang so weiter geht schiesst mir irgendwann Blut aus den Ohren. Und das ist nach den ersten paar Malen nicht wirklich so spassig, wie es sich vielleicht anhoert.

The White Stripes – Get Behind Me Satan
Wie konnte man sich dieses Album nach “Elephant” nicht kaufen? Schade nur, dass “Get Behind Me Satan” einfach nur abgedroschen wirkt. “Forever Is For Her” finde ich gut, aber der Rest…naja, deswegen erstellen wir die Liste ja gerade.

Na dann, das waren doch mehr CDs, als ich mir auf Anhieb zugetraut haette. Coldplay gehoert natuerlich auch in die Liste, aber das haben schon genug Leute erwaehnt. Heutzutage hoere ich zu 90% iPod Shuffle, da gehen auch die Fehlkaeufe nicht verloren und tauchen alle Jubeljahre mal in der Playlist auf. Das Stoeckchen werfe ich mal Gunnar und Petra zu, zumal es sie frueher oder spaeter doch bestimmt eh erreichen wird Und natuerlich Victoria, damit sie ihr neues Blog um einen weiteren Post bereichern kann.

Victoria’s Blog

Spent some time this morning to set up a webpage for Victoria. She has to create a page for one of her grad school assignments, and I figured hey, why not secure the domain and add a blog while we’re at it. I didn’t look around much – Roland is using WordPress for his page, so I figured I’d give that a try. And I have to say that I’m quite impressed with the ease of use, I’ve never created a complete blog in such a short time. Apart from a few small roadblocks (write permissions for the correct folders, making sure the webserver recognizes index.php and the like), this has been a breeze to set up. The Crystaltech server has been just as cooperative, creating the MySQL database and managing the access permissions didn’t take any trial and error.

So here it is, VictoriaEstrella.com! I don’t think I’ll make any changes to my own page (this site is still all hand-coded and updated “the hard way”, with a tiny bit of help of HaloScan for comments), but it’s fun to see how easy PHP/MySQL pages have become.

That doesn’t look very healthy…

But apparently it is. Just watch the video and ignore the (German) commentary. Freaked out yet?

SSI Goldbox Emulator

With all these great emulators to play the old Ultima, LucasArts etc. games in a Windows environment, why has nobody written one to play the old SSI Gold Box games? There’s two programs that update Unlimited Adventures (which I used for ages back when it came out – but I don’t know if I can find any of my old modules today ). But what about a fancy Windows emulator that lets me play Pools of Darkness etc.? Not that I can’t get them to run using DosBox, but I don’t really want to

The Joys of PC Games

Oh…that… I’ve reinstalled the various Infiity Engine games. I want to play them. But yeah, I kinda forgot how difficult it can be to run PC games that are older than a year or two. For one, after all these years there still isn’t an official no-CD patch for Baldur’s Gate 2 and the expansion pack. Worse, the old trusty Gamecopyworld doesn’t have a crack, either! The idea was kinda that I’d be playing these games on my laptop wheverever I am, and having to keep 4 different CDs in my pocket doesn’t sit particularly well with that. Which brings us to problem #2: none of these games support widescreen displays. So now I can either play a stretched game in fullscreen or a windowed 1600×1200 game with woefully tiny sprites and details. I tried the tiny stuff a bit yesterday and my eyes started to hurt – I guess I’ll go to a stretched display next.
